Mercedes team F1 leader “It’s a pity to lose Nick de Vries”[F1-Gate.com]

The Mercedes F1 team’s technical chief says it’s a ‘disappointment’ to lose Nick de Vries.

Nik de Vries made his one-off F1 debut with Williams F1 at this year’s F1 Italian Grand Prix due to his role as the official reserve driver for the Mercedes F1 team, but he will be second for Red Bull for 2023. Signed with the team Scuderia AlphaTauri.

But Scuderia AlphaTauri F1 team principal Franz Tost doubts Nick de Vries will make an early start with the team this season in the form of Friday practice.

“I don’t think he can do it because he still has a contract with another team,” said Franz Tost.

“I hope to see him at the Young Drivers Test in Abu Dhabi.”

It’s up to Mercedes.

“What I see is a really nice guy, but a very knowledgeable guy who understands the sport and understands car engineering,” said Mercedes technical chief Mike Elliott.

“It’s a shame for our team to see him go somewhere, but at the same time we’re really happy for him.”

“It’s great to see a talented driver get an opportunity like that.”

Helmut Marko, a motorsport advisor to Red Bull F1, said De Vries would not take leadership in the team despite Yuki Tsunoda, who is five years younger, establishing himself as an F1 driver for Scuderia AlphaTauri. He even says it has the potential to work.

“Of course Alpha Tauri will benefit from Nick’s technical background,” said Helmut Marko.

“He’s been able to drive several F1 cars this season, so it’s great that he has that experience.”

“With his personality and experience, Nick should lead the team.”
