Introduction
Maybach’s twist on traditional Mercedes-Benz opulence comes in different models. The S580 and S680 sedans represent a more conventional approach to luxury car manufacturing within the Mercedes-Maybach profile, while the quiet EQS680 is a modern, electrified version of the flagship SUV.
The 2024 Mercedes-Maybach GLS600 falls somewhere in between. This luxurious model elevates the Benz GLS-Class SUV with richer materials, advanced suspension components and modern technology to pamper passengers.
The most exclusive variant of the GLS-Class receives some styling upgrades for 2024 that increase its appeal. The grille has been slightly modified and the front bumper air inlets now carry the Maybach logo.
A new 23-inch wheel design is available and new lights project Maybach logos onto the floor to draw passengers into the cabin when the doors are opened.
New quilted leather upholstery covers the SUV’s four sumptuous individual seats and is available in two new two-tone color combinations: Crystal White/Pearl Silver Gray or Mahogany Brown/Macchiato Beige.
Styles and options
The 2024 Mercedes-Benz Maybach GLS comes in just one model, the GLS600.
Power train
The GLS600’s twin-turbo V8 engine develops 550 horsepower and 538 pound-feet of torque and features a 9-speed automatic transmission. Additionally, the engine is assisted by a 48-volt hybrid system that gives it an extra boost right from the start.
Interior style
While the regular Benz GLS-class SUV has three rows of seats, the Maybach GLS600 only offers two, both with heating and massage functions. The rear seats are the place to be, with ample legroom and two power-adjustable reclining seats.
A three-seat bench is also offered, but the executive treatment is what this SUV is known for. The dashboard, door panels and seats are covered in Nappa leather, while real wood trim with an attractive pinstripe adds a touch of class.
A fragrance diffuser helps occupants create the sensory oasis they deserve following a hard day of being filthy rich.
Cargo capacity is not as generous as in the regular GLS-Class, as the rear seats are fixed and do not fold down to accommodate large items. However, Mercedes-Maybach claims that there is regarding 4.5 cubic meters of space behind the rear seats.
The two 12.3-inch infotainment screens use Mercedes-Benz’s latest MBUX software interface, and rear-seat passengers have two 11.6-inch screens that can play movies or control the sound system.
A Burmester audio system with 27 speakers is also available.
Security
Key safety features include standard automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, lane keep assist as standard, and adaptive cruise control as standard with lane centering function.
On the highway
During my first test, I was impressed by both its smooth ride and driving safety. The air suspension is standard and has a Maybach mode that practically eliminates bumps on the road.
Most cars with multiple driving modes typically have a single comfort setting, but the Mercedes-Maybach GLS600 has three profiles that prioritize flexible driving. Upon start-up, the GLS defaults to Comfort mode, which sets the engine, transmission, traction control and steering feel to a relaxed calibration.
This configuration provides the smoothness that Maybach customers expect to find in their luxury SUV. The steering feels light but immediate, and the GLS600 oozes around town with tidy body control that belies its dimensions.
When the road gets twisty, you can put the GLS600 in Sport mode to increase responsiveness, but Curve mode offers an alternative for more relaxed driving.
Curve mode is a bit strange at first, but as you get used to the GLS600’s machinations, it’s easy to settle into the big SUV’s gentle pace. Rear passengers will also like Curve mode around town and on many 90-degree turns, especially if they’re reclined to the edge of the executive seats.
Conclusion
Every inch of the GLS600’s interior has been optimized for comfort and richness. The GLS’s third row has been deleted in favor of a four-seat layout with plenty of legroom for rear passengers.
The GLS600 feels muscular and refined, and rear-seat passengers won’t even feel like they’re moving. In that sense, Mercedes-Maybach has accomplished its mission with the GLS600.
