The German company, Mercedes, announced its intention to rely entirely on itself in the production of engines for its next generation of electric cars, as of 2024, instead of the technology coming from external partners.
Markus Schaefer, director of the Development and Purchasing Department of the Daimler Group that owns Mercedes, was quoted by Bloomberg news agency as telling the German economic magazine “Automobile Fühe”: We are significantly increasing the depth of added value and are working to shift from relying on external sources to local production.
“We would like to perfect the entire system of the electric motor, battery and power electronics as much as possible similar to what we do with a combustion engine,” Schaefer added.
Suppliers of Mercedes’ electric powertrain components include ZF Friedrichshafen and Valevo Siemens e Automotive.
The electric and hybrid passenger cars that Mercedes delivered in 2021 reached a record high with a 70% increase.
Sales of electric passenger cars powered by a Mercedes EQ battery increased by 155% to nearly 49,000 vehicles.
Schaefer said that Mercedes plans to reach 50 percent of its sales in electric or hybrid cars by 2025.
He added that Mercedes intends to discuss expanding its capabilities to produce electric motors worldwide.
The production of the first high-performance coaxial motors construction kit is to be produced in Berlin by the electric motors maker YASA.
