Mercedes-benz ChatGPT

Mercedes-Benz is further expanding the use of artificial intelligence and integrating it into the voice control of its vehicles as the next step. With the arrival of ChatGPT, voice control via Hey Mercedes of the MBUX voice assistant will become even more intuitive. An optional beta program will start on June 16, 2023 in the United States for more than 900,000 vehicles equipped with the MBUX infotainment system.

Customers will be able to participate via the Mercedes me app or directly from the vehicle using the voice command “Hey Mercedes, I want to join the beta program”. The deployment of the beta program will be over-the-air. Mercedes-Benz integrates ChatGPT through Azure OpenAI Service, leveraging enterprise-grade capabilities from Microsoft’s cloud and AI platform.

Added for voice control via Hey Mercedes

Mercedes-Benz’s MBUX voice assistant – already an industry benchmark – is renowned for its intuitive operation and wide range of commands. Both driver and passengers can receive sports and weather updates, get answers to their questions about their surroundings or even manage their smart homes.

ChatGPT complements the existing intuitive voice control via Hey Mercedes. While most voice assistants are limited to predefined tasks and responses, ChatGPT leverages a large language model to dramatically improve natural language understanding and expand the topics it can answer.

Mercedes-Benz combines the best of both worlds, enhancing validated MBUX voice assistant data with ChatGPT’s more natural dialog format. Users will experience a voice assistant that not only accepts natural voice commands but can also conduct conversations. Soon, attendees asking the voice assistant for details about their destination, to suggest a new dinner recipe, or to answer a complex question, will receive a more comprehensive response – all while keeping their hands on the wheel and their eyes on the the road.

Mercedes-Benz guarantees data privacy

A collaboration with Microsoft allows the integration of ChatGPT. With Azure OpenAI Service, Mercedes-Benz leverages the large-scale generative AI models of OpenAI combined with the enterprise security, privacy and reliability capabilities of Azure. Mercedes-Benz retains full control of IT processes in the background. The collected voice command data is stored in the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Cloud, where it is anonymized and analyzed.

Data protection is a top priority for Mercedes-Benz. Customers know at all times what information is collected and for what purpose, and they are free to make their own decisions. Mercedes-Benz protects all customer data against manipulation and misuse.

« Integrating ChatGPT with Microsoft into our controlled cloud environment is an important milestone in making our cars the center of our customers’ digital lives. Our beta program boosts existing functions of Hey Mercedes like navigation queries, weather queries, etc. with ChatGPT capabilities. We aim to support conversations with natural dialogues and follow-up questions. Our customers can always count on us to guarantee the best possible protection of the confidentiality of their data. All under the guise of one big goal: Redefining the relationship with your Mercedes. », Markus Schäfer, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, Head of Technology, Development and Purchasing.

Mercedes-Benz offers customers the opportunity to test the latest technologies in their vehicles as early adopters. The US-focused beta program is expected to last three months. In return, Mercedes-Benz developers will get useful information about specific requests that will allow them to set precise priorities in the further development of voice control. The results of the beta program will be used to further improve the intuitive voice assistant and define the deployment strategy for the large language models in more markets and languages.

ChatGPT compliant with Mercedes-Benz AI principles

GPT from Mercedes-Benz stands for “Generative Pre-trained Transformer”, a family of large language models trained to create or summarize texts, answer questions, translate languages and even generate codes programming. ChatGPT is built on a sophisticated neural network developed by the OpenAI company.

Mercedes-Benz takes an approach to ChatGPT integration that adheres to the company’s AI principles to make the benefits of innovative AI solutions accessible to customers. Mercedes-Benz is closely monitoring potential risks and the system will be constantly improved to benefit all customers.
