After several electric sedans, AMG decided to release a new V8 model. But once more, the manufacturer has not entirely ignored the electric.

Mercedes-AMG reaches new heights of power thanks to electric assistance. The top-of-the-range version of the S-Class just presented has a total power of 590 kW/802 hp and a torque of 1430 Nm thanks to the combination of a V8 petrol engine and an electric motor, making it makes the most powerful variant of the high-end range ever built. The S 63 E-Performance will go on sale next year.

Consumption equivalent to that of a small car

Powerful, but fuel-efficient, the plug-in hybrid engine must make it possible to reconcile the requirements of climate protection and customer preferences. This last point is ensured by the powerful 4.0-litre eight-cylinder biturbo, combined with a nine-speed automatic transmission, which alone develops an output of 450 kW/612 hp and a torque of 900 Nm. 80 kW/109 hp and 320 Nm housed on the rear axle, coupled to a two-speed gearbox, boosts power and reduces normalized consumption, including at high speed.

It draws its power from a 13.1 kWh battery mounted above the rear axle. The electric range of 33 kilometers is relatively low, the main function of the electric drive being not emission-free driving but to provide additional power to the internal combustion engine. And of course, to reduce the normalized consumption, which, with 4.4 l/100 km, is at the level of those of a small car.

The rear of the powerful sedan is recognizable by its four trapezoidal exhaust outlets and its diffuser.

Performance, on the other hand, is much higher, with a passage from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.3 seconds and a top speed limited to 250 km/h (290 km/h as an option). To keep control of the heavy sedan despite its excessive power, Mercedes has done a lot of work on the chassis. All-wheel drive goes without saying. Added to this are, among other things, the all-wheel steering of the S-Class, the adaptive air suspension, the active roll stabilization which keeps the vehicle stable when cornering, as well as active engine mounts. High performance composite brakes ensure safe braking.

In terms of design, the AMG differs from the classic S-Class by its slightly more aggressive side, with a grille with vertical slats, large openings in the lower part of the bumper, a diffuser and four trapezoidal tailpipes in back. In the passenger compartment, instruments and decorative elements in the AMG look are offered to the occupants, whose number can rise to four. The manufacturer has not yet communicated an official price. Compared to the 580e rechargeable hybrid model, the most expensive to date (available from 155,000 francs), AMG should display a much higher price.
