On the occasion of Monterey Car Week, Mercedes has lifted the veil on the second generation of its AMG GT. It is in a way the fixed roof version of the current SL. Meaner, of course, but also more practical. Just like the convertible with the star, this second AMG GT of the name becomes a 2+2. Mercedes nevertheless specifies that these two additional seats are only suitable for people measuring up to 1.5 m.
More practical
Inside, we find the same layout as in the SL, including the central vertical screen of 11.9 inches and the digital instrument cluster of 12.3 inches. As for the trunk, it is accessed through a large tailgate and it now reaches 321 liters and even 675 liters once the rear seats are folded down. When you are told that it is more practical.
Up to 585 hp and 800 Nm for its twin-turbo V8
Under the hood of this AMG GT also hides the same mechanics as in the SL: a 4-liter twin-turbo V8 associated with a 9-speed automatic transmission. 2 versions of this block will be available. The AMG GT 55 has 476 hp, 700 Nm of torque, a timed 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 s and a top speed of 295 km/h. As for the AMG GT 63, it has 585 hp and 800 Nm to reach 100 km/h in 3.2 s and a maximum speed of 315 km/h. In both cases, the German accuses 1.97 t on the scale.
More than one trick up his sleeve
To make its new AMG GT nearly as fast as the previous generation Black Series, Mercedes used a few tricks. Among the latter, there is in particular an active aerodynamic system, a directional rear axle as well as Mercedes’ 4Matic+ function capable of sending power to all 4 wheels or only to the rear axle. We do not yet know the prices of this new AMG GT, but we imagine that they should approach the prices of the SL which is already around 170,000 € in the 55 version and 200,000 € in the 63 variant.
