Merab Dvalishvili’s UFC 311 performance was nothing short of legendary. He not only successfully defended his bantamweight title against the formidable Umar Nurmagomedov in a thrilling five-round battle, but he did so while battling a secret weapon: two deep, nasty cuts on his leg.
These wounds, sustained in November, cast a serious shadow over Dvalishvili’s ability to compete.Slow to heal, the cuts eventually became infected, raising legitimate concerns about his clearance from the notoriously stringent California State Athletic Commission.
“I was worried the commission was not going to let me fight,” Dvalishvili admitted on The Ariel helwani Show. “I was doing everything, putting creams every day, doing massage, and all the therapies. And actually, California has a very strict commission. They check everything, my body.”
Steadfast to compete, dvalishvili employed a bit of tactical brilliance during his commission inspection. With a sly grin, he revealed to Helwani, “the commission guy asked me to show him my shin, so I lifted my left leg, pants and showed him the shin, and he kept talking. The second time he asked me to show him my other leg, I showed again my left leg, and he didn’t know there was a cut.”
This clever maneuver, combined with his unwavering commitment to treatment, ultimately worked. The commission cleared Dvalishvili to fight, allowing him to enter the octagon and deliver a performance that solidified his dominance in the bantamweight division.
