Mental disorders: accompanying and supporting caregivers

2023-04-20 14:37:21

While in France, between 8 and 11 million people support a person with a disability or loss of autonomy, the FondaMental Foundation and the National Union of Families and Friends of Sick and/or Mentally Disabled People (Unafam) are launching, with the support of Klesia, a new campaign to support carers of people living with a mental disorder and provide them with resources to take care of themselves and their loved ones.

This joint work gave rise to two information campaigns for caregivers of people living with mental disorders in order to provide them with practical sheets, videos of testimonials from recovered people and caregivers, and interviews with experts.

“Caregivers are inseparable from the recovery process”, explains Dr. Romain Rey, head of the Fundamental Schizophrenia Expert Center in Lyon and CLAP, the Lyon Center for Psychiatric Caregivers (Le Vinatier Hospital). “Their contribution has a direct impact on the recovery journey of their loved one. However, their involvement can have an impact on their physical and mental health and isolate them. There is no health without mental health, which is why it is essential that caregivers have resources available to them. With CLAP and in partnership with Unafam, our goal is to sustainably connect caregivers to a network of professionals and peers on whom to rely, through actions such as this one or the BREF psychoeducation program. »

The objective of this campaign is to de-stigmatize mental disorders and to restore hope to carers and their loved ones, thanks to psychoeducational content and practical solutions.es :
