The debate on menstrual leave returns to the Senate this Thursday. A parliamentary initiative from the socialist group which is still struggling to become transpartisan, like its rejection in Commission on Wednesday February 7, provides for the establishment of a work stoppage for women in the event of painful periods.

The text of the socialist senators provides for the establishment of specific sick leave: a duration of two days per month maximum, without waiting period, with a medical certificate valid for one year. The initiative will be defended in the Hemicycle by the socialist senator, Hélène Conway-Mouret. It estimates that approximately 7 million women will be treated for dysmenorrhea – menstrual pain.

The measure is indeed struggling to gain traction in Parliament: in the Senate, a report had already positioned itself once morest the introduction of such sick leave, in June 2023, even if its conclusions had not achieved consensus among the rapporteurs.

We must not underestimate the generational question: there is a small gap between those who put forward this proposal and those who stand in the way.“, regretted Senator and former Minister of Women’s Rights Laurence Rossignol, rapporteur on this text, during a press conference. She nevertheless said: “opened“to the discussion to amend the text for the public session. In the spring, former Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne explained that the government was “watching how to encourage“employers in this field.
