A proposal by students of Chenggong High School in Taipei City to remove the requirement to embroider names on uniforms was rejected by the school council, causing controversy. Education Minister Pan Wenzhong promised in the Legislative Yuan today to invite relevant units to discuss the situation, and then think regarding how to adjust it following understanding the current situation of front-line schools. The media recently reported that the student organization of Chenggong High School proposed to delete the requirement of “sewing names on the left pocket of the uniform”, and it passed the service committee, but was voted down at the school administration meeting.
Pan Wenzhong went to the Education and Culture Committee of the Legislative Yuan today to report the business overview and prepare for questions. Wang Wanyu, a legislator of the Times Power Party, mentioned that a male student at Chenggong High School reported that he was harassed by strangers on the MRT because of the name embroidered on his uniform. Wang Wanyu pointed out that in response to the above-mentioned issues, the Ministry of Education’s National and Preschool Education Department only emphasized that there should be no gender inequality on campus. For example, only male students are required to embroider their names, but Chenggong High School is a “boys’ school”. When Pan Wenzhong answered the question, he immediately said that he did not think gender had anything to do with embroidery student number.
Later, following several rounds of dialogue with Wang Wanyu, Pan Wenzhong said that whether or not to embroider names on uniforms involves the implementation of front-line schools. The current regulations are not detailed enough. The Ministry of Education needs to understand the current situation with county and city governments and school representatives. He said that in recent years, a lot of time has been spent building consensus from all walks of life, including the ban on early self-study exams and the postponement of high school arrivals.
Pan Wenzhong promised to invite the National People’s and Preschool Education Department to discuss, hoping to have some discussions in 2 or 3 months. Name embroidery on uniforms involves issues such as identification and personal information, which should be discussed more carefully.
