North Dakota and Boston College share the No. 1 ranking this week in the USA Hockey/The Rink Live men’s poll. The Fighting Hawks become the fifth team (joining Boston University, Minnesota, Boston College, Wisconsin) to be ranked first in the poll this season.
It’s a return to the top for the Eagles, who were ranked No. 1 before Wisconsin dethroned them last week. It is the 89th week North Dakota has led the poll all-time, trailing only Minnesota’s 99. The last time UND (9-2-1) was ranked first in the poll was March 22, 2021. The Fighting Hawks have won five straight following sweeping Miami at home last weekend.
Boston College (9-2-1) earned a pair of victories over the weekend, including Friday’s overtime win, over Connecticut.
It was a short-lived time at the top for the Badgers, who fell on the road 4-2 and 3-2 in a weekend series once morest No. 11 Michigan State. Behind Trey Augustine’s 32 saves Friday and another 28 on Saturday, the Spartans moved to No. 7 while the Badgers slipped to No. 6.
Michigan State’s Joey Larson, a transfer from Northern Michigan, scored a power-play goal late in the second period on Friday and Tanner Kelly followed with just over a minute left in the period with a tally to give the Spartans a 3-1 lead. In that period alone, Michigan State outshot the Badgers 21-7 and 42-34 for the game.
Quinnipiac moved up four spots to No. 3 and Denver slid to No. 4 following being ranked second last week. Minnesota fell from sixth to eighth following splitting with Notre Dame.
Cornell took the biggest dive this week, falling seven spots to No. 17.
