The Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni on the occasion of the death of archaeologist Michalis Andrianakis, he made the following statement:
The well-known archaeologist Michalis Andrianakis has passed away
“It was with great pain that I learned of the loss of the Honorary Curator of Antiquities Michalis Andrianakis. Michalis has been a reputable scientist, a dedicated public servant, an active citizen and, for me personally, an excellent partner and friend. A solid archaeologist, with a varied work in research, writing and the field, Michalis Andrianakis dedicated himself to the protection and promotion of the Byzantine and post-Byzantine monuments of Crete. In his long tenure at the Archaeological Service, the culmination of which was the directorship of the Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities, but also, subsequently, as President of the Scientific Committee for the Promotion of Fortifications of Crete, he had a unique contribution to the protection, restoration and promotion of the Venetian fortresses of Crete, but and the building stock of the old city of Chania.
Michalis is responsible for the project highlighting the unique fortifications of Chania, the implementation of which gives another dimension to the image of the city, highlighting its enormous wealth. In our last communication, a few weeks ago, he was talking to me about how, in his opinion, Izzedin should be promoted. Michalis Andrianakis was a concerned citizen, with informed opinions, with which we may not always agree, but we had to counter with equally strong arguments. He defended the necessity of local community participation in the promotion of cultural heritage and did not hesitate to publicly express his views. Michalis Andrianakis left prematurely, he still had a lot to give. To his family, I extend my sincerest condolences.”
