The serra dance, which two years ago was added to the National Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage, comes from crossings of ancient pyrrhic dance patterns and incorporates elements from footwork, swordsmanship and other forms of pyrrhic dances. After the inclusion in the National Index, the next goal is to include the serra dance in the Representative List of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage.

During the event, Ms. Alexia Ioannidou, member of the Culture Committee of the Pambodian Federation of Greece and responsible for the serra dance in the National Intangible Cultural Heritage Index, presented the most important points of the File that led to the registration of the serra dance in the National Intangible Cultural Heritage Index Heritage as well as the video created as part of this effort.

As mentioned by Mrs. Ioannidou, the serra dance with various formations through the centuries reached today while maintaining its authentic core. The dance consists of three parts, the argon serra, the fast serra or tromachton and the serra ti mas(x)eri. It is danced armed by young men wearing the typical Pontic black zipka. Neither exaggeration nor indolence is allowed. Everything is organized according to Aristotelian measure. It is based on the self-discipline of the dancers and the plastic homogeneity of the dance form.

“It is a universal dance, it was danced all over Pontus. The diversity of the figures, the fights – 14 in number – is due to this fact, since each region enriched its variation with its own dance idiom. This is how the battles of Trebizond, Argyroupoli, Kromni, Matsouka and other centers of the centuries-old presence of the Greeks in the Black Sea were saved. The same is still happening today, we meet him in all the lengths and breadths of the earth where Pontic Hellenism lives and creates, making sure to keep its institutions and tradition alive by dancing with pride their most beloved dance, serra” he says among other things Mrs. Ioannidou in the video presented during the event.
