On March 1, 2024, author Akira Toriyama passed away due to acute subdural hematoma. News of his sudden death was reported in major media outlets around the world, and there were many words of condolence for the loss of a great talent. Once once more, it made me realize how much Akira Toriyama and Dragon Ball are loved around the world.

Here, I would like to take a look back at the great influence Dragon Ball had on the expansion of Japanese manga and anime into the world, and praise its achievements.

Many people probably know how popular Dragon Ball is. It began serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1984, and since then, the book has been published in more than 80 countries around the world, with a total circulation of approximately 260 million copies.

Anime is also very popular. It has been made into a television series since 1986, and the total number of episodes in the series so far has reached approximately 800. A new series, “Dragon Ball DAIMA,” is also scheduled to air from fall 2024.

Additionally, there are over 20 theatrical animations. These manga and anime are probably watched by hundreds of millions of people around the world, perhaps even more.
