Even with the best data, here’s why you need two, or even three, weather apps on your mobile device

The best weather apps make sure you never get caught out by nature’s whims. Because the last thing you need is sudden rain or unexpected gusts of wind ruining your plans or outdoor activities.

MétéoMédia and Weather (Apple)

On my iPhone, I use Apple’s home weather app and MétéoMédia. Each has its own qualities and uses a very different interface, but the second is more accurate according to my observations of the state of the sky, even in Tokyo, where I have been for several months.

The Weather Network gave me a better forecast for bad weather; rain and humidity. For some reason, Apple Weather doesn’t show good humidex readings here, while the Weather Network’s data is accurate to the amount of sweat my clothes absorb as soon as I step outside.

NERVE

When abroad, you also need to install a country-specific app. For example, the NERV app warns me of natural hazards and earthquakes before they reach populated areas. It is important to know that the Japanese island is surrounded by beacons at sea along seismic faults. Since the transmission waves travel faster than the shock wave, high-speed trains and subways have time to stop, let the tremors pass and continue on their way.

Be aware that here, there are on average three earthquakes per day, the vast majority of low amplitude. Surrounded by faults, Japan is located in the worst place on the globe for earthquakes. Fortunately, all the buildings are strong enough to withstand the most horrible tremors. The only thing left is Big One, that everyone fears.

CARROT Weather

Another weather forecasting option is CARROT Weather, which gives you your forecast with a dash of misanthropic humor meant to brighten your day – even if Mother Nature has other plans.

Right from the first opening, you will have to adjust the humor level of the app. There is the free version for seven days, but to have all the Premium Ultra functions, the subscription is $53/year, or Premium for $26.49/year.

The Weather Channel

The Weather Channel and AccuWeather are also good options, while Clime: NOAA Weather Radar Live and RadarScope are a great way to access more detailed satellite views of the sky for those who can decode them.

The free, ad-supported version of The Weather Channel (TWC) app is available on Android and iOS. The TWC app provides you with a wealth of weather data such as temperature, wind and visibility on an hourly or daily basis, with a 10-day forecast. Interactive maps can display the latest Doppler radar data to show precipitation and weather events as well as severe weather alerts.

The Premium level costs $40/year.

AccuWeather

AccuWeather

AccuWeather is the app to turn to for hyperlocal forecasts that give you the information you need. The app’s daily forecast includes everything from rain probability to air quality, wind, cloud cover, and UV index. Live radar lets you track storms, snow, ice, and temperature changes.

All weather apps are available on Google Play Store and Apple App Store.
