She claims that Fratelli d’Italia has rejected Ursula-bis by speaking of a “choice of coherence” but assures that the position of the party she chairs “has nothing to do with the role of Italy, which is not given by the choices of the parties of the majority in Parliament, but by its weight within the European Union and the credibility of its government”. 72 hours after the Strasbourg vote that gave the green light to the reconfirmation of von der Leyen as president of the European Commission, Giorgia Meloni emphasizes that she behaved “as a European leader should behave” because “I believe it is my duty to say when I think things will not work, rather than sweep the dust under the carpet”. The task of the Government, she recalls during an interview with Corriere della Sera, “is to help chart a course, not to watch in silence what happens. I think about what is best for Italy and for Europe”, the Prime Minister then added, explaining that the issue is not von der Leyen yes or no, “the issue is what are the priorities that Europe must deal with”.
The negative vote of the MEPs of via della Scrofa, however, is convinced Meloni, will not affect the negotiations on the Rome-Brussels axis for the delegations that she claims for the Italian commissioner. “I think this interpretation is surreal. It is claimed that von der Leyen does not recognize the role that the member countries determine their weight, but decides based on whether the government parties voted for her or not? If I were you, I would consider this interpretation an insult”, the words of the Prime Minister, who also excludes an interference by France and Germany to downsize Italy at the end of the negotiation: “I think the decision now belongs to the President of the Commission. We are not a province of the empire, everyone recognizes the weight and role of Italy and I am sure that these will be the evaluations that will be made when the delegations are defined”.
The prime minister will have to indicate a man and a woman for the role of commissioner: the first will be Minister Raffaele Fitto, on whom Palazzo Chigi is firmly counting, while the second (purely formal) could be a representative of civil society. The hypothesis of diplomat Elisabetta Belloni, whose work at the G7 had been highly valued by Palazzo Chigi precisely in view of a European assignment, is still in vogue. However, the assignment of High Commissioner for Foreign Policy has fallen through (now gone to Estonian Kallas). On the subject, however, Meloni is not yet showing her cards: «I do not start from the name, but from the delegation. Our priority – and therefore the message for Brussels – are the delegations of an economic, industrial, competitiveness, cohesion nature, which allow us to help Italy and Europe». When the picture is clearer, she concludes, «we will identify, together with the majority, the best person». The majority is united on the name of Fitto.
