The Duchess of Sussex said she had confused the “hierarchical dynamic” of the royal family “once it existed”.
In an interview with the American magazine “The Cut”, Meghan, 41, spoke regarding her life when she was a member of the British royal family, and why she and the Duke of Sussex moved to the United States.
Speaking of her exit from the royal family, the Duchess said it “takes a lot of effort to forgive”.
She also talked regarding Prince Harry’s relationship with his father, Prince of Wales.
Asked by journalist Alison B Davis regarding the impact of the privacy case once morest the Mail on Sunday, Meghan said: “Harry told me: ‘I lost my dad in the process’.”
“It doesn’t have to be the same for them as it was for me, but that’s his decision,” she added.
A spokeswoman for the Duchess later told BBC News that Meghan had been referring to her father, whom she had been away from, and had said she hoped the same would not happen to her husband.
A source close to Prince Charles told the British News Agency (BA) he would be sad if Prince Harry felt the loss of their relationship, adding: “The Prince of Wales loves both of his sons.”
Prince Harry, 37, had previously said his father, Prince Charles, “stop taking my calls”, following the couple resigned as senior members of the royal family in 2020.
Under this arrangement, the couple renounced their titles of Royal Highness and were able to function financially independently. Harry retains the title of Prince by virtue of his birth within the royal family.
Prior to this, it was reported that the Sussex family had set out a vision to continue serving as members of the Commonwealth royal family and earning their own money, hoping this would reduce the ‘hype’ around them.
“This is, for whatever reason, something we’re not allowed to do, even though many other family members are doing exactly that,” Meghan told The Cut.
After announcing that they would be stepping back from their royal duties, Prince Harry and Meghan initially moved to Canada in January 2020.
But following Canada said it would stop providing security for the family, the family moved to California, where they lived in a home provided by American actor and producer Tyler Perry before buying their own home in Montecito.
Davis – an essayist who has interviewed celebrities such as Jada Pinkett Smith and Lena Dunham – asked Meghan if she thought there was room for tolerance between her and the royals and her own family.
The Duchess replied: “I think tolerance is really important. Unforgiveness takes a lot of energy.”
“But it takes a lot of effort to forgive. I really put in a lot of effort, especially knowing I might say anything.”
It was also stated in this interview with Megan:
- She has spoken of her fears that staying in the UK might expose her three-year-old son, Archie, to excessive media attention.
- She criticized her lack of control over the publication of family photos, when she was a high-ranking royal.
- She said Archie learns the importance of morals, with the phrase “morals make a man” repeated over and over once more.
- She talked regarding how the couple initially resisted viewing their $14.65 million California home because they didn’t think they might afford it.
- She revealed that she had packed their bags (to leave) at their residence, Windsor, while visiting for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
- She revealed that she was considering returning to Instagram.
Meghan’s interview with The Cut was part of a promotional effort for a podcast on the Duchess’ Spotify service, entitled Archetypes, which launched last week.
Among the guests who will appear on it are singer Mariah Carey and tennis legend Serena Williams, as the show promises to “examine, dissect and undermine the ideas that try to hold women back”.
The Sussexes have signed deals with Spotify and Netflix since leaving Britain.
Prince Harry told Davis he didn’t think some members of the royal family might live and work closely together, as he and his wife do.
The article described how the couple runs their company, Arch Well, while sitting at one desk in a shared home room.
“Most of the people I know and many in my family are unable to work and live together,” Prince Harry said.
“It’s really weird because it feels like a lot of pressure. But it’s normal and normal,” he added.
Harry and Meghan have had legal battles with some British media outlets, and the Duchess told Davis that she would only have been able to pick Archie from school in Britain “under an arranged royal session with regarding 40 bound journalists to take pictures”.
“Sorry, I have a problem with that,” she said. “It doesn’t make me obsessed with privacy. It makes me a strong, good mother who protects my child.”
But many royal correspondents used social media to say that was not the case.
The interview included scenes from the life of the Duke and Duchess in their California home, where the young family dances to the sound of Prince Harry – while baby Lillipet watches the family from the arms of the nanny – and Archie calls his parents “Mama” and “Papa”.
