Meeting at Maximos today, Mitsotakis

Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Nikos Christodoulidis in their meeting scheduled for today, Thursday 19/09/2024, at 11 am at Megaros Maximos, they will discuss the crucial issue of cable Greece – Cyprus, the immigration in the context of the efforts for a united front of European countries against Germany’s decision to start checks on its borders, but also of course relations with Turkey in view of the Mitsotakis-Erdogan foursome in New York.

Regarding the electrical interconnection between Greece and Cyprus, etcall details have not been given by the Greek government, however, according to information, at today’s meeting it is expected that the desire to proceed with the project will be expressed as it will have positive effects for everyone.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Nikos Christodoulidis will give the directions at the political level and possibly determine the next steps that must be taken so that the agreement is beneficial for all sides.

Despite the obstacles that have arisen along the way, there is optimism that this meeting will give impetus to the discussions. It is recalled that the day before yesterday the cabinet in Cyprus took a decision on the regulatory framework of the electrical interconnection between Greece and Cyprus, however it also placed some asterisks which, according to information, Athens would not want to exist.

Germany cannot move on its own

Berlin’s decision to reintroduce border controls, effectively scrapping the Schengen Agreement, has deeply unsettled many of its European partners.

Cyprus, especially after the developments of the last year in the Middle East, has reached its limits in terms of immigration. From the first moment, Greece reacted against Germany’s unilateral moves and for many days has been building alliances with countries of the South to prevent any unpleasant developments as we are a country of first reception. This issue will concern Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Nikos Christodoulidis in order to determine their position in view of the Summit in Brussels in October. “Everything will be discussed and in fact the president of Cyprus will be accompanied by the first ever Deputy Minister of Immigration, Nikolas Ioannidis,” a senior government official told Newsbeast.

It will be preceded by the appointment of the Greek Prime Minister with the Turkish President in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. The Greek mission is feverishly preparing for all eventualities as recently Turkey seems to be raising the tone with the latest incident being the attack by the representative of Erdogan’s party, Omer Celik, on the Minister of Defense, Nikos Dendias.

Regarding the Cyprus issue the Greek government has declared through Kyriakos Mitsotakis himself that its solution is a priority for Greek foreign policy.

However, Turkey still maintains a tough and uncompromising attitude as was recently seen by the attitude taken by the Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan during the informal meeting of the EU Foreign Ministers where he fully rejected the responsibility for the deadlock on the Cypriot side.
