Woo Hee-jun (29), a former Miss Korea national representative for Kabaddi, is drawing attention ahead of the 19th Asian Games, which will open on the 23rd in Hangzhou, China.
Woo Hee-joon has a unique career as a former Miss Korea school district officer (ROTC). He entered Ulsan University in 2016. Afterwards, through the prank of his juniors, he applied for the 2019 Miss Korea pageant, but was selected as the line through the competition rate of 700:1. He was also chosen to represent Korea in the international beauty pageant ‘Miss Earth’. It is known that at the time of applying for Miss Korea, he decided to participate with the thought that he might ‘promote Kabaddi, an unpopular event’.
After graduating, Woo was commissioned as the 59th ROTC in 2020. His explanation is that while serving as a platoon leader in a search company, he taught platoon members regarding kabaddi and supplied kabaddi as a combat stamina event. As an interpreter officer, he was unable to abandon his lingering attachment to Kabaddi even while dispatched to Lebanon, and was eventually discharged as a lieutenant on June 30 and joined the national team following a selection match.
Woo said, “I have experience of winning gold medals or first place in the Asian Championships and other competitions, but the lack of medals in the biggest competitions left me with a lot of regret from the player’s point of view.”
Even the name is unfamiliar, Kabaddi means holding your breath in Hindi, and is a mixed sport of tag and martial arts. Two teams of 7 each play the game, and a point is awarded when an attacker from one team touches a defender and returns safely to his own half. Conversely, if the defenders who have been touched prevent the attacker from reaching their own field, they will score points. It is also a great feature that the striker has to repeatedly shout the word ‘kabaddi’ when he goes over to the opponent’s camp.
At the Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games in 2018, our men’s team defeated India, the country of origin, and won a silver medal. Among the women’s team who missed the bronze medal at the time, Woo Hee-joon turned to the military, but this time, she is challenging for a medal with the ‘Taegeuk mark’ once more.
Meanwhile, the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China was scheduled to be held in 2022, but was postponed in the followingmath of the coronavirus infection and will be held this year. It starts on the 23rd of this month and ends on the 8th of October.
