Meet VALL-E, an artificial intelligence capable of sending messages with your voice

Imagine chatting over voice with your best friend, only to realize that the whole time you were talking with an artificial intelligence. This might now be the case, since this is the whole principle of VALL-E, a new artificial intelligence.

Already in the past, we might communicate with an artificial intelligence such as Siri or Alexa, but VALL-E is still something else entirely. This AI invented by Microsoft is able to reproduce your voice by adding your charisma, your emotions, and even your environment, in a few clicks. All you need to do is send a sample three-second voicemail message, with the content of the message you want to send, and that’s it.

Potential problems

And if this new feature can be useful, for example when you are in a place where you cannot speak, or if you want a message that you have written to be delivered orally to your interlocutor, it raises also seriously questioned, especially for reasons of identity theft. Because if you are able to reproduce your own voice, you can also use that of others. It is therefore now entirely possible to use the voice of Britney Spears and make her say anything and everything.

However, Microsoft is currently working on a system that would distinguish a voice produced by VALL-E from a real voice. As you will have understood, this AI is as intriguing as it is disturbing.

At present, the tool is not yet accessible to the general public but might very well become so shortly.
