Yanis, 21, and Myriam, 22, affirm, photo in support, on the social networksTwitter that they met the fugitive Adrien Rompen and that it was they who, following discovering his true identity, called the police and allowed his arrest in Spain.
Yesterday, the Verviers section of the Liège prosecutor’s office announced that the fugitive who killed his wife in 2015 was intercepted in Spain on Monday following 17 days on the run.
Yanis and Myriam told us their version of the facts. They decided to spend a month’s vacation in the small Catalan village of Montblanc. During a weekend by the sea, in Tarragona, they say they meet Victor, a Belgian in his forties. The feeling goes pretty well.
They say they notice two, three strange things
The man wants to get a tattoo and Myriam is a tattoo artist. According to the couple, Victor changes his plans to follow him to Montblanc and insists on doing a lot of activities with him: hiking, visiting a monastery, parties etc.
They stay together for a few days. But, Yanis says they notice two, three strange things: “He’s always very vague when he talks regarding his past… We learn that he’s been in prison for a bit. At the moment, we don’t worry too much regarding him. It can happen to anyone”. Myriam ends up asking him why he went to prison. He answers, they say, “that he very rarely used cocaine in his life, but that the last time he took it, he went a bit too far, without further details. It still concerns us”. They report that they learn later that evening that her children no longer speak to her: “He says word for word that they spat on him”.
As their interactions progress, Yanis and Myriam realize that he never talks regarding the mother of his children. Yanis, at this time, speculates that he may have beaten his wife, while hoping that this is not the case.
According to the couple, Victor has the wrong first name twice
They find him one evening and they describe an atmosphere “bizarre, heavy”. “He had brought 5 liters of sangria, white wine, when we were three”.
Yanis reports that at one point, he tells a story by using the wrong first name, he introduces himself as Adrien and not Victor. The next day, when the couple wants to be alone, Victor imposes himself once once more. He offers to exchange their photos via email. And still according to the couple, Victor begins by writing an address beginning with “adr”before crossing it out and writing Victor. “It was obvious that he did not know the address well and at that time it clicked”.
It had been speculated that he may have had a problem with his wife. But why did he kill her?
Yanis questions him: “You’ve been cheating twice. Victor, is that your real name?”. He replies that “It’s a delirium he has with a friend to call himself Victor for the trip, it makes you think of victory. It’s the mood of this trip, my name is Victor for a month”. Yanis finds it weird, but he tries not to think regarding it anymore.
It is only the next day that the couple shares their impressions of Victor and Yanis reveals to Myriam that it is not his real first name. She says she doesn’t have a good feeling with Victor, who just has to join them at 2 p.m.
Yanis begins to imagine, without really believing it, that he may be on the run: “In my head, it was a movie script, it was not reality”. He types on his phone the words: Adrien, wanted, Belgium. And there, “First article, I come across a large photo of his head, the murderer of his wife has not returned to prison for more than 10 days. The Belgian police are actively looking for him”. “We are flabbergasted. We cannot believe it at that time. We had speculated that he may have had a problem with his wife. But from there to what he killed her? Never, we might never have imagined that”continues Yanis.
It’s noon, twelve-thirty, a lot of stress. The couple has an appointment with Victor in an hour and a half. Yanis and Myriam call 112. They explain the story to the Spanish officers in English: “There is a fugitive who killed his wife. We have been seeing him for 5 days. We know where he is. We have to come get him right away”.
To realize that we spent five days with him
Adrien arrives early for the meeting, at the same time as the police car: “As I wave to the police to tell them to approach us, I see Adrien walking quietly in our direction”. Yanis panics but he manages to point his finger at the fugitive, while saying as loudly as possible in the direction of the police car: “He is the man”it’s the man.
The police intervene directly and apprehend the fugitive. “To realize that we spent five days with him… He touched us, hugged us… Five days where he lied to us, where he expressed no regrets”notes Yanis.
Two days following this outcome, Myriam and Yanis do not fully realize what they say they have experienced: “It’s complicated to realize the extent of what was behind this man’s escape… We were involved in this, without wanting it”still believes Yanis.
Myriam considers that this episode will make them “more vigilant, suspicious in the future”. The couple, who add that they are not completely recovered from their emotions, will return to France this week.
Contacted, the Liège prosecutor’s office is unable to confirm this version of Adrien Rompen’s arrest. He says he has not received any information regarding the arrest in Spain.
