As part of the Salzburg Festival this year, Gotthold Ephraim Lessing’s “Nathan the Wise” will be performed on the Pernerinsel in Hallein. Stage design, music and light stage the ring parabola in an exciting way.
Blue light, figures disappearing behind a veil of mist. The stage in the old salt works is transformed into a high room with columns. The bottom is made up of rings. These rotate. Sometimes in the same direction, sometimes in the opposite direction. The people who walk on it hardly move their upper bodies. They seem to be gliding along and yet remain in the same place for a long time.
“Every religion contains everything”
This year, as part of the Salzburg Festival, Gotthold Ephraim Lessing’s (1729 – 1781) “Nathan the Wise” will be shown twelve times in the old salt works. The four-hour play is set in Jerusalem during the Third Crusade (1189-1192). Then the rich, Jewish merchant Nathan is called before the sultan. He needs to replenish his war chest. In order to determine whether Nathan is willing to “voluntarily” lend the Muslim warlord money or whether his “goods and blood” must be taken from him by force, the ruler asks him which of the three monotheistic religions is the “true”. Nathan replies with the famous parable of the three rings (the original and two imitations) with which a hesitant father awards his three sons his favorite ring. The rings represent the religions of Christianity, Islam and Judaism. Just as the two rings are indistinguishable from the real ring, neither are the three religions. “Because everything is contained within each one,” says Nathan. He has a foster daughter who was baptized a Christian and was brought up as a Jew by him. The Christian Templar has fallen in love with her. However, it turns out that they are siblings. There are also family ties to the Muslim sultan.
The play is regarding religious tolerance and being human. The acting performance, the stage design and the musical accompaniment inspired the audience. All performances are sold out.
