London : The UK Cabinet Office’s ‘Chief Mouser’ Larry the cat does not get along with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s pet Nova, Rishi’s wife Akshata Murthy has revealed.Larry the cat is the ‘official rat catcher’ at 10 Downing Street, London’s official residence of the British Prime Minister. Larry has been here for the past 12 years.
Akshata told a show on a British channel that Larry had a fight with Nova, a Labrador breed. Nova has mixed feelings about living in Downing Street. It’s because he doesn’t get along with Larry. Akshata said that if there is a fight, Larry will always win.
Larry the Cat’s X (Twitter) account is always full of witty and funny posts about the current political climate in Britain. Another dog?! Bring back Liz Truss…’ was the post that appeared on Larry’s X account last November when Nova was brought to 10 Downing Street. Rishi became the British Prime Minister on October 25 after Liz Truss resigned.
When former Prime Minister Boris Johnson brought Deline, a Jack Russell cross pet dog, to Downing Street in 2019, Larry was still not ready to accept. Orphan cats are appointed to the post of Chief Mouser in Britain. Larry has met five Prime Ministers during his tenure: David Cameron, Theresa May, Boris Johnson, Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak. Also, Larry went on to remain in office longer than many other prominent British Prime Ministers.
Larry has been in charge of Downing Street longer than Prime Ministers Margaret Thatcher, Tony Blair, Winston Churchill and Benjamin Disraeli. Larry the gray and white cat became the official rat catcher on 15 February 2011 when David Cameron was Prime Minister.
Larry was brought to Downing Street from an organization that rescues stray cats. Larry has been described as the James Bond of Rat Catching. Larry the Cat, the caretaker of the Prime Minister’s residence, would not let anyone in without his permission.
