BOLIVIAN POLICE have arrested Bolivia’s top military commander, Juan Jose Zuniga Macias, over a failed coup attempt.

Macias is a controversial figure in Bolivian politics and the military.

During his tenure as Bolivian Army Commander, Zuniga was marred by a number of allegations and disputes. He was named by former President Evo Morales as the main man behind the so-called “black plan,” an alleged plot to target political opponents and coca grower leaders.

During his career, Zuniga was accused of embezzlement several times. He was charged with embezzling at least 2.7 million bolivianos intended for Retna Dignidad and Juanvito Pinto’s bonus, among other social projects. For this charge, Zuniga was sentenced to seven days in prison and was charged with falsifying documents related to the payment of travel expenses.

On the other hand, Zuniga’s rise in the Armed Forces was due to his understanding of political movements and his abilities in military intelligence despite his controversial history.

El Deber, a publication claims that Zuniga never excelled academically while advancing in the military. However, his high status has been guaranteed by his cognitive skills and understanding of political dynamics.

Furthermore, in early 2024, President Luis Arce confirmed Zuniga’s position. However, his term as commander came to an abrupt end after he made comments attacking former president Evo Morales.

Zuniga made the comments Monday, saying Morales “can no longer be president of this country,” adding that he would not tolerate any action that tramples on the constitution or does not comply with the mandate of the people.
