THE Iranian president and the Qatari prime minister on Monday (26/8) discussed developments in the region and ways to maintain stability amid ongoing Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip, Palestine.

According to the Qatari Foreign Ministry and Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani arrived earlier in Tehran to meet Iranian officials, including Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

During their meeting, Al Thani and Pezeshkian discussed developments in the region and ways to protect security and stability in the region.

For months, Qatar, together with the US and Egypt, has been trying to reach an agreement between Israel and Hamas to ensure a prisoner exchange and a ceasefire and allow humanitarian aid into Gaza.

But mediation efforts stalled due to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s refusal to meet Hamas’ demands to end the war.

On Sunday, Israeli warplanes launched more than 40 airstrikes on southern Lebanon, the heaviest attacks since cross-border attacks between Tel Aviv and Hezbollah began on October 8, 2023.

The Israeli army claimed that the strike was aimed at preventing rocket attacks from Hezbollah.

The Lebanese group said it had launched hundreds of rockets and missiles at Israel in the first phase of its response to the killing of its senior commander Fouad Shukr last month in an airstrike in Beirut.

Iran has also vowed to retaliate against Israel for the killing of Palestinian Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on July 31. The escalation follows Israel’s brutal assault on the Gaza Strip that has killed more than 40,400 Palestinians since Hamas’s offensive on October 7.

The military offensive has left much of the region devastated and many people homeless, hungry and vulnerable to disease. (Ant/Z-2)
