As the 2021 US Open champion, Medvedev, who is seeded fifth this time, is one of four players to defeat world number one Jannik Sinner this year.

Despite not being the favourite, he remains a threat to stars such as Sinner, four-time US Open champion Novak Djokovic and defending champion Carlos Alcaraz.

“He may be underestimated, but I think that’s a bit normal, because in the last few weeks, he hasn’t played well enough to be one of the three favourites for the title,” his long-time coach Gilles Cervara told the tournament’s official website. USOpen.org. (M-3)
