Medusa Submarine Cable: Enhancing Connectivity and Bridging the Digital Divide in the Mediterranean Region

“Once completed, Medusa will be the longest cable in the Mediterranean Sea and will offer better North-South and East-West connectivity. According to forecasts, the submarine cable will link Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Morocco and Algeria in 2025 and the link works with Tunisia, Greece, Cyprus and Egypt s will perform in 2026. With its 24 pairs of fibers with a minimum capacity of 20 terabytes per second (Tb/s) each, “Medusa” will meet the “increasing demand” for broadband in the region.

Inspection operations will start this year. The fabrication and installation of the equipment is planned for 2024 and 2025. The Medusa submarine cable “will create unprecedented opportunities for collaboration, innovation and economic development” and will contribute to bridging the digital divide in the region. The cable will leave from Lisbon and cross 16 countries including Morocco before reaching the Egyptian city of Port Said. The project is expected to cost an investment of 326 million euros.
