Medicine new program at the National University Medellín headquarters

Two great novelties are coming for the academic exercise of the National University, Medellin campus.

The first, the One Health genomic laboratory It will have a new headquarters, larger and with the possibility of settling in it entities that allow progress in new inventions.

The second, Unal’s headquarters in Medellin will offer, at a time that has not yet been established, academic programs of the so-called sciences for life. Among them, medicine.

According to Juan Camilo Restrepo Gutiérrez, vice-rector of the campus, these are two pieces of news that have been working on for some time, and that will soon begin to diversify the possibilities of professional academic training for the youth of Antioquia.

But how would they come true?

Transfer of the One Health laboratory

The National University of Medellin It has several properties in Antioquia, one of them is in the area of El Tablazo, eastern Antioquia. “This is a property where we want to take the laboratorio One Health”, said the vice-chancellor.

And it is that in practice, the laboratory reached its occupancy limit. There are few spaces available for the proper development of research and for the possibility of future inventions.

“It is sad to see how it has already reached its point of overcrowding (the One Health laboratory). There are many projects and a very large material in equipment, and for this reason the idea is to be able to transfer it to another space”, added Restrepo Gutiérrez.

With the move, the National University of Medellin It might open the possibilities for other entities to come to the laboratory to broaden its investigative spectrum.

Currently, the genetic laboratory has 300 square meters of space, and with the transfer it might increase its space to 30,000 square meters, for the development of research and the accommodation of other companies.

the new faculty

The other news is that the National university of Colombia plans to build a faculty of life sciences at the Medellin campus.

In this way, the university might offer programs such as medicine, nursing and pharmacy, among others, in the city.

However, Juan Camilo Restrepo Gutiérrez clarified: “It is a process that has challenges in the short, medium and long term. In other words, in the short term, the transfer of the One Heal genomic laboratory in El Tablazo will be established; in the long term, the Faculty of Life Sciences will be established at the Medellín campus, and in the medium term, we have been working with the San Juan de Dios Hospital and the San Vicente Hospital in Rionegro, to establish an academic, training and practice alliance our future apprentices in the matter. We will dedicate ourselves to teaching and research, which is what we know how to do, and we are already articulated with the ecosystem of medicine and patient care that exists in these two places in Rionegro,” said the vice-chancellor.

That is what you know so far of the new projects in the National University, Medellin campus.
