A study published in the journal Science suggests that women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can benefit from the natural properties of mugwort, a plant native to China and found in many parts of the world. (including Brazil) are easy to find.
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) affects one in 10 women of childbearing age, causing hormonal imbalances, irregular periods and cysts. The disease is metabolic in origin and is associated with an increased risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Currently, there is no specific drug for polycystic ovary syndrome, and patients most commonly take oral contraceptives or diabetes medications.
Researchers at China’s Fudan University already had evidence that a molecule extracted from mugwort can increase thermogenesis and the body’s metabolism, and now they wanted to examine whether it might have a positive effect in patients with PCOS. After showing good results when administering the molecule to model rodents, the researchers tested a botanical drug on 19 PCOS patients.
The results showed that following 12 weeks of treatment, testosterone and anti-Müllerian hormone levels (which are higher in PCOS patients) stabilized. By performing imaging tests, the researchers also found that PCOS patients also had a higher than normal number of mature follicles, but also fewer. Additionally, the volunteers had regular menstrual cycles during treatment, and no one mentioned significant side effects.
“Our findings highlight the great potential of plant derivatives as effective drugs in the comprehensive treatment of PCOS,” they said.
However, new tests are needed to confirm mugwort’s potential as an alternative treatment for PCOS. Andrea Dunaif, an endocrinologist and professor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, warned in an interview with Medscape that people should not rush to buy mugwort extract online to treat PCOS. “We’re not at that stage yet,” he warned.
