A potentially life-changing artificial pancreas is being tested in 900 people in England with early stage type 1 diabetes. It can eliminate the need for a fingertip blood test and prevent life-threatening episodes of hypoglycemia when blood sugar levels get too low.
The technology uses subcutaneous sensors and a hybrid closed-loop system. It continuously monitors levels, and the pump automatically adjusts the amount of insulin needed. But the blending system is not fully automated because of the need to input the amount of carbohydrates that are eaten at mealtimes.

This is the first time the technology has been tested nationally in the world, and it comes 100 years after the first diabetic patient received insulin injections. This technology can improve the quality of life and see that most of the patient’s blood sugar readings are within the target range, and the patient no longer needs to continuously monitor blood sugar levels,
Previously, the UK’s National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommended that every type 1 diabetic in England could have some form of continuous glucose monitoring via sensors attached to the skin.
