Farès Antaki, R5 in Ophthalmology – McLaughlin Clinical Subspecialty Fellowship
Committed to the community, Fares Antaki is co-founder and president of the Aleppo Foundation, which supports newly arrived Syrian families in Montreal.
Twelve years ago, he himself left his native Syria to come and study in Montreal. “All my youth, my ophthalmologist father spoke to me regarding the eyes, and that fascinated me. For me, ophthalmology is a specialty that combines medicine and technology very well.”
Dr Antaki now intends to pursue further training at Moorfields Eye Hospital and University College London Institute of Ophthalmology, an institute specializing in AI. “The best way to be at the cutting edge of technology is to seek knowledge where it is,” he believes.
His research project focuses on the study of predictive indices of risk of neurocognitive disorders and cardiovascular diseases from retinal images, using deep learning. At the end of his stay in London, he will go to the United States to complete two years of additional clinical training in retinology. Dr. Antaki will then work at the CHUM as a retinal surgeon and researcher at the CRCHUM in emerging technologies.
“What I like regarding this specialty is its clinical aspect and its surgical aspect. Knowing that we can change the lives of patients is gratifying,” he concludes.
Gabrielle Jutras, R5 in gastroenterology – Fellowship from the Faculty of Medicine
“Gastroenterology and hepatology interest me because they combine the medical management of patients, the diversity of cases and the technical aspects of these disciplines, such as endoscopy and transplantation. Thanks to this expertise, patients who enter the hospital come out with a new life,” says Gabrielle Jutras.
Dr. Jutras will undertake a two-year fellowship in clinical hepatology at the University of California at San Francisco, focusing on the outpatient management of patients with liver disease and the prevention of liver cancer. In his eyes, the goal of a post-doctorate is “to see what is done elsewhere, to compare practices and to report what is done best, such as upstream intervention to prevent hospitalizations”.
At the same time, she will complete a master’s degree in epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Disease in order to acquire skills in public health, before joining the hepatology department of the CHUM.
Xavier Deschênes-Simard, R5 in hematology – Perras, Cholette & Cholette grant
Xavier Deschenes-Simard practiced research in biochemistry at the Faculty of Medicine of UdeM before entering medicine at McGill University. During his residency, he discovered a penchant for hematology that reconciles his interests: molecular biology, cell therapy technologies and patient interaction. “It’s a great discipline from the point of view of human contact. When we tell young patients – quite a number of them – that we can cure them, and that we succeed, it is extremely rewarding.”
While his doctorate took him to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, this time he will go to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York to receive additional training in the use of cell therapies in the treatment of cancer.
Upon his return, Dr. Deschênes-Simard will join the hematology department of the CHUM, which wishes to develop a cell therapy program for solid tumors (lung cancer, melanoma, breast cancer, colon cancer, etc.) – a first in the country.
