Campeche, Campeche, February 11. – The work of Cuban medical professionals in ten states of Mexico allowed for increased care coverage, and by the end of 2022 they provided 242,000 services, of which 110,246 were specialty consultations, reported the head of the Secretariat of Federal Health (SS), Jorge Alcocer Varela.
By participating in the Mexico-Cuba Bilateral Meeting, Salud IMSS-Bienestar announced that Cuban doctors have coordinated laboratory services in our country, carrying out 46,191 analyzes and 41,418 radiological studies, which practically they were not done in Mexican hospitals.
In January, productivity grew even more with 43,700 services, and he explained that, derived from the consolidated purchase of medicines made by Mexico for 2023-2024, 19 keys were awarded to Cuba in the areas of anesthesiology, pulmonology, ophthalmology and for cancer treatment, with a maximum amount of 1,576,113,359 Mexican pesos.
He thanked the brotherhood of the Republic of Cuba with the work of health workers: medicine and science professionals, as a result of the cooperation agreement on the matter made in May 2022.
The general director of the Mexican Institute of Social Security, Zoé Robledo Aburto, thanked the President of Cuba for his solidarity with the support of specialists who care for low-income populations, as part of the collaboration agreement between the two countries, to address the personnel deficit of health. 610 medical specialists have arrived in Mexico, following the agreement that was concluded in July 2022 with the Cuban Medical Services of the Ministry of Health of that country. These health personnel work in 29 high-demand specialties such as internal medicine, pediatrics, general surgery, family medicine, ophthalmology, nephrology, intensive care, imaging, cardiology, dermatology, and otorhinolaryngology.
The Cuban doctors are in large general and civil hospitals, as well as in small community hospitals “where many times their arrival meant the first time that there was a specialist doctor on staff, and ready to care for the people who need less ”.
They are distributed in 12 states of the country, in the cities and in the most remote areas such as La Mesa del Nayar, in Nayarit; The Mountain of Guerrero, the Costa Chica of Oaxaca, the desert of Baja California Sur; Cananea, Sonora; Tlaxcala, Colima, in the Tierra Caliente of Michoacán, in the Huasteca Alta of Veracruz, in Zacatecas, Morelos and Campeche. In May 2022, a call for specialists was launched, and of 14,423 vacancies, 21.2% was covered. The privatizing model for decades bet on the defeat of the public health system, by not investing enough in the training of health professionals.
The Minister of Public Health of Cuba, José Ángel Portal Miranda, recognized the close relationship linked to the development of science and in the health field. The cooperation covers medical care, training of human resources, advice from professionals in primary care, and academic exchange in specialties such as oncology, cardiology, nutrition, and mental health, among others.
He explained that 603 students from Mexico are preparing in classrooms in Cuba; of them, 509 in undergraduate and postgraduate.
