A healthy expectant mother who went to a hospital in Prague in the Czech Republic for a gynecological examination reportedly instead underwent an abortion last week following being mistaken for another patient.

“This was an unforgivable human error and those responsible have been suspended. The Minister [tchèque de la Santé] considered that the victim should be compensated, even if the loss suffered by the mother cannot be compensated by financial means,” ministry spokesperson Ondřej Jakob said on Monday, according to Belgian media 7sur7.

Last Monday, the mother-to-be went to Bulovka hospital, in the capital Prague, for a gynecological follow-up when the doctors explained to her the medical procedures for an abortion which was intended for another patient.

Except that the woman spoke neither Czech nor German, that is to say the two languages commonly spoken in the country, so that she would have signed the declaration provided by the doctors, even if the document did not It was not in his name, a source reportedly told the Czech news channel CNN Prima News.

“The staff should have realized that the patient did not understand the content of the statement,” insisted the victim’s lawyer, Dagmar Raupachová.

According to her, the treatment team should have called on an interpreter when they realized that the woman did not speak either language.

For its part, the hospital would have apologized to the family in a press release, while the story would have caused a lot of ink to flow in the country, according to 7sur7. The doctors have been suspended, and criminal charges might be filed once morest them.

Ultimately, the woman might receive compensation amounting to some 10 million Czech crowns, regarding $575,000, an expert estimated at CNN Prima News.
