The rigorous design of research and medical experimentation are key to gaining ground once morest the disease; however, imagine medical solutions supported by the latest technological advances it is the door to find answers to difficult-to-treat diseases.
This was stated by the professor of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Technology of the University of the Basque Country, Dr. Gorka Orive Arroyo, in his magisterial conference “Latest advances in regenerative medicine and tissue engineering”, in the International Congress Advances in Medicine (CIAM 2023), which takes place at the Santander Performing Arts Group (CSAE).
Orive Arroyo’s investigations stand out for the microencapsulation of live medicines to treat diabetes; the physiological therapies with the blood of the same patient; the tissue regeneration y regenerative surgeryamong other advances.
“This is what the medical community does, dreaming of therapies to contribute to health and imagining the capacity of new technologies to develop them,” he told the audience gathered in the CSAE’s Plácido Domingo room.
Advances include the development of living medicines that doctor Gorka Orive develops with his team. “We have been working on it for several years and, logically, we use a fundamental aspect that is the cells used for the release of some type of therapeutic agent”, he explained.
These are microparticles, such as insulin, where the patient will have a prolonged effect of the live drug. “They are long-term drug release systems so that once these drugs are administered, we don’t have to apply them constantly.”
He stressed that, following years of study, they are already reaping the fruits of research and experimentation.
“We are giving treatments to be able, for example, address pathologies that until not long ago were difficult to treat. It is true that, in many cases, there has been a lot of progress with certain techniques, specifically, with stem cells and their applications”.
In recent years, the gene editing systemsthe development of new tissue systems and chips to simulate human tissues and organs designed in laboratories by professionals with innovative instruments and technology.
Orive Arroyo emphasized the cell therapy, which has a wide field of development in areas of medicine and which can meet expectations with regenerative medicine, as was tested with immunotherapy.
In addition to living drug therapies, he highlighted the field of cyber medicine to obtain data through electronic implants in order to monitor diseases, such as heart disease, or achieve early diagnoses such as cancer.
