Everyone wants to be healthy, and it would be a bolt from the blue to be misdiagnosed. A 53-year-old woman in the United Kingdom was diagnosed with a rare blood cancer by the hospital a few years ago, and she needed to take medicine for life. The woman quit her job and devoted herself to treatment. Unexpectedly, her “condition turned around” in the end, and the woman complained to the hospital angrily claim.

According to comprehensive foreign media reports, Janice Johnston, a 53-year-old British woman, was diagnosed with a rare blood cancer in April 2017. The medical staff told her that she needs to take medicine for life, otherwise she will be at great risk of heart disease, and even blood clots may occur anywhere in the body, leading to stroke. Janice then quit her job to concentrate on her treatment.
One and a half years of chemotherapy revealed that she was misdiagnosed
During chemotherapy, Janice’s weight dropped to only 44 kg (regarding 96.8 lbs), and she experienced side effects such as dizziness, nausea, and fatigue, but her condition never improved. So the doctor increased the dose of the drug and performed a puncture. One and a half years later, Janice saw that the treatment was ineffective, so she decided to transfer to another hospital for treatment. As a result, she went to another hospital for an examination and was told, “You don’t have cancer, and your health is fine.” Instead, she had just another non-cancer disease that left her with too many red blood cells.
Janice was outraged and incredulous to learn that she had been misdiagnosed all along, a “cruel joke”:
The misdiagnosis has severely impacted my life, which is unforgivable. I have lost faith in doctors. If I had had my bone marrow biopsy and scans done, I wouldn’t be sitting here and still be working.
Janice said frankly that she not only had to face the torment of cancer alone, but also personally told her husband and 4 children the bad news, and endured a year and a half of chemotherapy. Unexpectedly, it turned out to be a misdiagnosis, which did not improve her real condition at all. In the end, she sued the hospital for medical negligence and demanded £75,950 (approximately HK$796,000) in compensation; the hospital involved also agreed to compensate, and the two parties settled.
