Medical Error in Child Sophie Meshaleb’s Case: Lack of Equipment and Accountability at Roum University Hospital

“During an interrogation session in the case of the child Sophie Meshaleb for the four doctors who caused the child’s medical error, in the presence of the doctors and their clients and in the presence of the child’s father and his client, lawyer Ayman Jazini, the single criminal judge in Beirut, Fatima Jouni, asked the anesthesia doctor Ziad Fadel regarding the reason for the cessation of his work with the Roum University Hospital. His answer was literally: “I left the hospital because I did not want to change my statement.” He added: “The hospital did not have a link to monitor the pressure in the operating rooms. Before the operation began, we searched all the operating rooms and did not find any link designated for a child of Sophie’s age. For the sake of this, the same standards were followed for me.” They followed Sophie’s previous anesthesia procedures and anesthetized her without monitoring the pressure.”

The issue of Rum University Hospital’s lack of these basic equipment for operations on premature children in surgical operations was the subject of great controversy between the father of the child, Fawzi Meshlab, and the hospital, as the hospital always denied this painful and dangerous fact, which is considered one of the most important conditions for monitoring during surgical operations.

Here, the Lebanese Ministry of Health is responsible for not holding the hospital accountable for this major violation of the most basic safety standards, especially since the girl’s father had repeatedly written to the Ministry of Health regarding the issue and informed them in writing regarding performing operations on children before Sophie without monitoring the pressure due to the lack of these equipment.
