“As a society, I think it is important to better understand why social acceptability is higher and the demands are more numerous. This research mandate will make it possible to analyze the Quebec situation,” Sonia Bélanger, Minister responsible for Seniors and Minister for Health, said in a press release on Friday.

A call for proposals will therefore be launched to try to better understand the use of medical assistance in dying, which represented 6.8% of deaths in Quebec in 2022-2023.

In fact, 5,211 people used this service during this period, according to data from the minister’s office.

The research will aim to compare Quebec to other provinces as well as internationally, to understand the differences in the organization of care and services.

Nearly 90% of them were either suffering from cancer, a neurodegenerative or neurological disease, or even heart or respiratory diseases, the press release said, and the vast majority had a survival prognosis of one year or less. .

Some 97% of patients also reported “intolerable and unrelievable” physical and psychological suffering, according to the data.

“This research mandate will equip the government and partners with the issue of medical assistance in dying. This will allow us to better understand the trend observed in Quebec,” added Nancy Guillemette, MP for Roberval and government assistant to the minister, for the palliative and end-of-life care component.
