Media: New abortion law to be presented on Friday – Sp takes dissent

NRK writes that Sp wants to keep the current abortion law, which allows for abortion up to week twelve.

DN writes that the Labor Party, Venstre, SV, MDG and Red are expected to vote yes to the proposal. It will give 80 representatives, five less than what is needed to be adopted.

In that case, it only takes a handful of defectors from the Center Party, the Conservative Party and the FRP to get the law passed. In the past, the parties have expressed that the representatives can vote freely in the matter.

The law also deals with the current system of abortion boards. After week twelve, pregnant women must apply for an abortion, and this application is processed in a tribunal.

Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre (Ap) initially had plans to present the new abortion law to the Storting before the summer. In May, however, he announced that it will not arrive until the autumn.

Health Minister Jan Christian Vestre (Ap) said at AUF’s summer camp in August that he is proud that the government “soon will present to the Storting a historic amendment to the law which involves a modernization and extension of the current abortion law”.
