Media: Danish-Israeli hostage declared dead by Hamas

The Danish-Israeli hostage Itzik Elgarat was declared dead by the militant movement Hamas on 9 March.

The death was announced through Hamas spokesman Abu Ubaida via a Telegram channel associated with the movement.

This is written by TV2.

In a post on the messaging service, Hamas states that it has confirmed the identity of Itzik Elgarat and the other hostages.

The media has been in contact with David Baker, who is the spokesman for the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu.

From here, the message reads that the spokesman is “unable to help”.

According to TV2 correspondent Rasmus Tantholdt, it is not necessarily certain that Itzik Elgarat is dead.

– This message, which Hamas made a month ago, does not mean that it can be said with certainty that the Danish-Israeli hostage has been killed, says Tantholdt to the TV station.

– It is very important to keep this information out in the open.

Rasmus Tantholdt spoke with the hostage’s brother, Daniel Elgarat, in the Israeli city of Tel Aviv on Sunday.

According to Daniel Elgarat, the Israeli intelligence service has stated that it fears his brother is dead.

But the lack of information means that no official answer has been given regarding the death.

It has not been possible for TV2 to confirm what the intelligence service has informed.

The situation of the Danish-Israeli hostage has long been unknown.

Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen (M) said in November last year that Denmark was still pushing to get the man home.

There was nothing concretely new to report, and Denmark had heard nothing more than that it was assumed that Itzik Elgarat was in Gaza.

There had also been no signs of life at the time, the foreign minister said.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs states in a written comment to Ritzau that it is aware that Hamas has published a video in which a “Danish-Israeli citizen is referred to as having been killed in Gaza”.

– The Ministry of Foreign Affairs can neither confirm nor deny the information, it says.

The ministry is in “close contact” with, among other things, Israeli authorities, but cannot provide further information as it is a personal matter.

According to the brother, the hostage was kidnapped in a kibbutz in Israel during the attack on October 7 last year.
