In a coordinated action between several municipal entities, the Mayor’s Office of Medellín demolished an illegal structure in the La Colinita neighborhood, located in the Guayabal commune, which had caused serious inconvenience to the residents of the area. The intervention was carried out near the El Bolo field, after receiving multiple complaints from residents about the improper use of a green area.
According to neighbors, the structure, which had been transformed into a paved and closed space, was used to organize nightly parties and functioned as parking for motorcycles. These events generated annoying noises, especially during weekends, affecting coexistence and tranquility in the sector.
The demolition was ordered by Police Inspection 15 of Guayabal, after verifying an urban planning violation. In a previous inspection carried out by the Secretariat of Territorial Management and Control, the roof and walls of the illegal structure had already been partially removed. However, the owners rebuilt the roof, which led to the definitive intervention.
The action was supported by an inter-institutional team that included the Secretariats of Security and Coexistence, Mobility, and Health, as well as Public Companies of Medellín and the Person’s Office. The Mayor’s Office of Medellín reaffirmed its commitment to urban order and the protection of public spaces, guaranteeing the well-being of citizens and compliance with regulations.
With this demolition, the aim is to recover the green area for the enjoyment of the community and put an end to the illegal activities that disturbed the peace of the residents of Guayabal.

**Interview with Juan Carlos Gómez, Community Leader of La Colinita Neighborhood**
**Editor:** Welcome, Juan Carlos. Thank you for joining us today. The recent demolition of an illegal structure in La Colinita has stirred quite a discussion. Can you tell us a bit about the community’s response to this action by the Medellín Mayor’s Office?
**Juan Carlos Gómez:** Thank you for having me. The response has been overwhelmingly positive. For months, we’ve dealt with the noise and disturbances from that illegal structure, which was being used for parties and as a parking area for motorcycles. Many residents felt their peace was being invaded, especially on weekends. So, to see the Mayor’s Office take action has really brought a sense of relief and hope to our community.
**Editor:** What specific issues were residents facing due to the presence of this illegal space?
**Juan Carlos Gómez:** The main issues were noise and the loss of a green area that was meant to be enjoyed by everyone. Many families have young children who couldn’t play outside because of the late-night parties and the heavy motorcycle traffic. There were also safety concerns—people felt uncomfortable with the gatherings that took place there.
**Editor:** You mentioned that residents had previously raised complaints. What steps did the community take to address this situation before the demolition?
**Juan Carlos Gómez:** Initially, we tried to resolve the issue by reaching out to the owners and asking them to limit the activities. When that didn’t work, we organized neighborhood meetings and documented our complaints to present to the local authorities. It was crucial for us to show that this wasn’t just a few individuals complaining, but a collective concern from the entire neighborhood.
**Editor:** How do you envision the recovery of the green space after the demolition?
**Juan Carlos Gómez:** We are hopeful that the recovered area will be transformed into a community park where families can gather, children can play safely, and residents can enjoy the outdoors. We also hope that the local government will engage with us to help design this space to meet the needs of our community.
**Editor:** Lastly, what message do you have for the city officials regarding urban planning and community involvement in such matters?
**Juan Carlos Gómez:** My message is simple: communication and collaboration are key. When residents are actively involved in the planning and decision-making process, it leads to a stronger, more harmonious community. We appreciate the swift action taken by the Mayor’s Office, and we look forward to working together to ensure our neighborhood remains a safe and enjoyable place for everyone.
**Editor:** Thank you, Juan Carlos, for sharing your insights. It’s clear how important community involvement is in these matters. We wish you and the residents of La Colinita all the best in the future!
**Juan Carlos Gómez:** Thank you! It’s been a pleasure speaking with you.
