The city of Medellin is facing a significant increase in homeless people. According to Mayor Federico Gutierrez, the number has risen from 3,000 to 8,000 in the last four years.
The president attributes one of the main causes to drug use, pointing out that there is a tendency to “romanticize” their use, which has serious consequences for those who fall into addiction.
Gutiérrez stressed that the problem goes beyond the occupation of public space, as it has also become a threat to the safety of citizens.
“These are people who have lost control of their lives, who are under the influence of drugs and have serious mental problems. And we can hardly intervene with them.”said the mayor.
Recently, a motorcyclist lost his life after being hit by a stone thrown by a homeless person, reviving the fear of similar events that occurred in previous years.
Citizen leaders and motorcycle groups have expressed concern about the growing violence associated with homeless people, reporting robberies and attacks on drivers.
However, the mayor acknowledged the legal limitations of forcing these people to receive help against their will.
“I have already asked my team for a reaction to this issue. It is not the first time this has happened. In other cases there have not been fatal accidents, but in this one there have been. It is a very delicate situation, and we need to act more decisively.”
