According to the boss of bosses, the “disconnection” between the warm-ups of the political debate and the reality on the ground is “very worrying”.
The start of the school year will be “socially quite calm”, considers the new president of Medef Patrick Martin, who finds “very worrying” the “disconnection” between the warm-ups of the political debate and the reality on the ground.
“I think the start of the school year will be politically hot, and socially quite calm,” says Patrick Martin in an interview with the regional newspapers of the Ebra grouppublished this Saturday.
“We are in a political configuration such that everything is becoming eruptive, and the National Assembly is getting heated around subjects that are of little interest to the general public. (…) This disconnection between political debate and social reality is very worrying,” he said.
“Put things in perspective”
Judging that the French know that the pension reform was “indispensable”, although “painful”, Patrick Martin remarks that “there was no mobilization in private companies”.
“There was a peak of 1.4 million demonstrators, which is considerable, but there are 28 million active people in France,” he notes.
Refusing to reveal his own salary – which represents “nine times the median salary of (his) company” -, Patrick Martin calls for “putting things in perspective” when talking regarding the remuneration of business leaders.
The very high salaries concern, according to him, “only a tiny minority of business leaders”.
“You have to know how to attract talent”
“The market for top managers is a global micro-market. Wanting to cap these salaries means exposing yourself to the risk that they will go elsewhere. You have to know how to attract talent”, pleads the boss of bosses who considers elsewhere that the remuneration of elected politicians “does not match their workload, their media exposure and the reputational and legal risks they incur”.
Patrick Martin, who took over as head of Medef on July 17, gave up operational management of his Martin Belaysoud group, of which he is the majority shareholder, to become chairman of the supervisory board.
“I want to be at the head of my company to celebrate its bicentenary in 2029”, assures the newspapers of the Ebra group the leader, now 63 years old.
Martin Belaysoud is a group of approximately 3,000 employees, specializing in professional distribution for the construction and industry sectors, which exceeds one billion euros in annual turnover.
