The president of the Mouvement des entreprises de France (Medef), Geoffroy Roux de Bézieux, says he estimates the damage to companies caused by the riots at one billion euros, which shook France following the death of young Nahel, killed on 27 last June by a police shooting in the suburbs of Paris.
In an interview with the “Parisien” published Monday evening, the leader of Medef indicated that “it is too early to give a precise figure but we are at more than a billion euros, not counting the damage to tourism. “, adding that the videos of the riots, which circulated in the world, “degrade the image of France”.
According to his figures, more than 200 shops were completely looted, 300 bank branches destroyed, 250 tobacconists affected, “with operating methods of absolute violence. Everything was stolen, even cash registers, before setting fire to destroy”.
With regard to compensation, which concerns many companies, especially the smallest ones, Roux de Bézieux assures us that “insurers are mobilized to go as quickly as possible”. And to add: “I am quite confident that the businesses concerned will be compensated”.
For public transport in Ile-de-France, the riots caused “at least 20 million euros in damage”, according to an initial estimate by the regional transport authority, Île-de-France Mobilités (IDFM) .
Urban violence erupted in France on June 27 following the death of young Nahel, 17, killed by a police officer during a road check in Nanterre. An amateur video widely shared on social networks showing a policeman shooting at the minor, however, contradicted the initial version of the policeman who fired the shot and his teammate and sparked indignation and anger in the country.
On the evening of the tragedy, violence between angry young people and the police broke out in Nanterre before subsequently spreading to other cities in the Paris region and other cities across the country.
As part of this urban violence, several countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom, have called on their nationals in France or wishing to go to France to be vigilant and to avoid mass gatherings.
