Hwang Sun-woo 200m freestyle silver medal… Leading to the men’s 800m relay final
Kim Seo-young, individual medley 200m 3 times in 6th place… Freestyle 400m Kim Woo-min-do final
(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Bae Jin-nam = A new wave is flowing in Korean swimming. I found hope once more at the World Swimming Championships held for the first time in three years.
Korea achieved great results in reconfirming its potential and regaining confidence in the management event of the 2022 International Swimming Federation (FINA) World Championships held in Budapest, Hungary until the 25th (local time).
The World Aquatics Championship, held every two years, is not a very comfortable stage for Korean athletes.
Until this competition, only Park Tae-hwan (2 gold medals, 1 bronze medal) had won a medal in the management event.
There were only six Korean players, including Park Tae-hwan, who stood at the starting platform for the final, where eight people competed, let alone medals.
In the last competition held in Gwangju, Korea in 2019, Kim Seo-young (Gyeongbuk Provincial Government) was the only woman to reach the final in the 200m individual medley and took 6th place without taking advantage of the ‘home’ at all. Excluding Kim Seo-young, there were only three players who made it to the semi-finals: Joo-ho Lee (Army Sports Corps), Su-yeon Baek (Jeju City Hall), and Park Soo-jin (Gyeongbuk Provincial Office).
But this year in Budapest was different.
22 athletes from Korea participated in the management event of this tournament.
In the men’s division, at least one athlete participated in all 17 individual events, which was the first time in history.
During the tournament, our players continued to perform, and Hwang Seon-woo (Gangwon Provincial Office) stood at the forefront.
Hwang Seon-woo, who has already attracted the attention of the world swimming world through the 2020 Tokyo Olympics held last year, wrote a new history every time he changed the current in this competition.
First of all, Hwang Seon-woo won the silver medal in the 200m freestyle final with a new Korean record of 1:44.47.
It was the first medal harvested by a Korean athlete in the management event of the long course (50m) World Championships in 11 years since Park Tae-hwan, the men’s 400m freestyle gold medalist at the 2011 Shanghai, China.
In the 200m freestyle, he achieved the best performance ever, surpassing Park Tae-hwan’s bronze medal at the 2007 Melbourne Games.
In addition, Hwang Seon-woo set a new Korean record five times, including four in the team event. There are five new Korean records that Korea set in this tournament, all of which came out when Hwang Seon-woo broke the current.
The men’s 400m relay (3:15.68), the 800m relay (2nd round, preliminary 7:08.49, final 7:06.93), and the mixed relay 400m (3:29.35), the team events, will break the Korean record. At that time, Hwang Seon-woo was always the first English player of the national team and led the race.
In particular, in the men’s 800m relay, he and his teammates made it to the finals of the world championship team event for the first time in Korean swimming history and proudly finished sixth in the world.
The team event was more meaningful because it might only be achieved through the growth of overall Korean swimming, not individual athletes. The Korea Swimming Federation, which has put a lot of effort into it, such as organizing a special strategy nurturing team and conducting a 6-week Australian field training with the goal of winning the first gold medal in the Asian Games team event, showed concrete results and put a lot of strength on their shoulders.
Although the spotlight was directed towards Hwang Seon-woo, there were not a few notable results.
Veteran Kim Seo-young was the first Korean swimmer to reach the final three times in a row in the individual event of the World Swimming Championships, showing off her strength. From the 2017 Budapest Games to this competition, Kim Seo-young placed sixth in the women’s 200m individual medley for three consecutive times.
The discovery of Kim Woo-min (Gangwon Provincial Office) was also a huge benefit.
Kim Woo-min reached the final in the men’s 400m freestyle for the first time in five years as a Korean male manager since Park Tae-hwan in 2017.
Kim Woo-min’s remarkable growth was a huge help in helping Korea reach the final in the 800m relay for the first time in its history.
Kim Woo-min, a freestyle mid- and long-distance athlete, has emerged as a strong candidate for the Asian Games multi-credit title.
It was at the Budapest Games in 2017 that Korea produced the most finalists in management events at the World Championships in history.
At that time, Park Tae-hwan (men’s 200m and 400m freestyle), Ahn Se-hyeon (Ulsan City Hall, women’s 100m and 200m butterfly), and Kim Seo-young (women’s individual medley 200m) made it to the finals.
In this year’s Budapest Games, the number of events is four (men’s 200m and 400m freestyle, women’s individual medley 200m, and men’s relay 800m), which is less than five years ago.
However, it is the highest number of players in history who have made it to the final as a team event.
The semi-final stage went up without difficulty.
Lee Eun-ji (Bangsan High), the youngest Korean athlete at the Tokyo Olympics last year, participated in the women’s 50, 100, and 200 m backstroke and successfully advanced to the semifinals. Sangil Girls’ Middle School) advanced to the semifinals of the women’s 200m breaststroke in their debut match at the international competition.
Joo-ho Lee reached the semifinals in the men’s 100m and 200m backstroke, and Jo Seong-jae (Goyang City Hall) advanced to the men’s 100m and 200m breaststroke semifinals.
Choi Dong-yeol (Gangwon Provincial Government) competed once once more by reaching the semifinals in the men’s 50m breaststroke and Jeong So-eun (Ulsan City Hall) in the women’s 50m butterfly.
