ALGIERS – The Government examined, during its meeting held Wednesday under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Nadir Larbaoui, the measures and arrangements taken to ensure the supply of the population with drinking water, within the framework of the implementation instructions from the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, to this effect.

The President of the Republic had repeatedly affirmed that supplying the population with drinking water “is at the top of the priorities” of the State.

During one of his periodic interviews with the national press, President Tebboune explained that current projects in the field of hydraulics, particularly seawater desalination stations, were able to to ensure a regular supply of drinking water for at least 15 years, without disruptions, highlighting the possibility of launching water transfer projects in the south of the country.

“Algeria has occupied, in a short time, the first place on the African scale and the third on the Arab level in terms of seawater desalination, in particular thanks to the desalination stations currently being built at the level of five (5) wilayas, the first stone of which was laid last year. These stations will make it possible to produce 2.5 billion m3 of desalinated water per year, to put an end to water stress”, indicated the President of the Republic during his interview.

National water production, which amounts to nearly 11 billion m3/year, is spread over 3.4 billion m3 of drinking water, 600 million m3 for industrial use and nearly 7 billion m3 intended for agricultural use.
