A measure proposed by Maryland lawmakers seeks to drastically restrict where tens of thousands of people can carry their guns with newly issued concealed weapons permits.
After a court ruling struck down the state’s rules for this purpose, 85,266 permits were issued in 2022 as a result compared to just 12,189 permits issued in 2021, according to figures from the Maryland State Police.
“The bill would make it illegal to carry a gun on anyone’s property without a specific permit, as well as restrict people with firearms from coming within 100 feet of a long list of places that provide so-called ‘public accommodations’. ‘, including practically all retail businesses in the state,” security expert Rodolfo Tapia explained.
More than two-thirds of the state’s population say gun violence is their top concern, one of the highest numbers in the United States, averaging 53%, according to The State of Safety in Maryland.
Some residents were pleased with the move.
“Well, in my opinion, I consider that it is not necessary to carry arms, because those who carry arms are willing not to defend themselves, but to kill,” said Jorge Berrios.
“Yes, I agree that they should be controlled because it is for everyone’s security, not only for Americans, but for us Latinos,” said Marilu Martínez.
Others believe that it is good only to protect themselves.
“Just to defend, but you know how people are sometimes when they abuse,” said Jackeline Adams.
The piece of legislation also requires applicants for concealed carry permits in Maryland to go through stringent background checks and complete 16 hours of training.
