Measles Outbreak Updates in Louisiana, Washington, Ohio, Florida, Indiana, Arizona, Minnesota, and Michigan

Louisiana

In Louisianathe Louisiana Department of Health issues public health recommendations following the confirmation of two cases of measles in the region New Orleans. Both cases were confirmed by laboratory testing after a visit to a New Orleans area emergency department. Both people were not vaccinated against measles and were exposed to the virus while visiting another state.

No other cases of measles are known in Louisiana at this time. By 2022, 87% of 2-year-olds in Louisiana had received the MMR vaccine.

In the state of Washingtona case of measles was identified in a resident of Spokane County. The rash onset date was February 15, 2024. This adult was exposed to measles while traveling abroad and became contagious upon return to the state. This case is not related to recent cases in southwest Washington. The SRHD has identified the following public locations, dates and times where potential measles exposures may have occurred in Washington state:

Sunday, February 11 – Monday, February 12: 9:30 p.m. – 12:30 p.m.: Spokane International Airport, Concourse B

Monday February 12:

  • 10am-4pm : Deer Park Library, 208 S. Forest Ave, Deer Park, WA

Ohio

In L’Ohioa case of measles was identified in a resident of Miami County. This person’s contacts are notified by local health departments to assess their measles vaccination status and provide them with information about the signs and symptoms of measles, as well as appropriate quarantine measures, the optionally. The patient frequented a store in Montgomery County before diagnosis on February 13 from 12:45 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. (Kroger Marketplace located at 885 Union Blvd, Englewood, Ohio).

This is the second case of measles reported in Ohio. The first case was reported Feb. 4 in Montgomery County when more than 230 patients at Dayton Children’s Hospital were exposed to a measles patient in the emergency department, along with an unknown number of members of their family (news from February 4). This is the first measles case recorded in Montgomery County in 19 years and the first in the state in 2024. It is unclear if the two cases are related.

Florida

THE county health authorities of Broward have confirmed that the ongoing measles epidemic in Florida has at least six cases (see the February 18 news). Florida’s preschool vaccination rate was about 90.6%, below the national average of 93.1%. School district figures show 86 students out of nearly 1,100 in Manatee Bay are not vaccinated against measles, CBS Miami reported.

Indiana

The Indiana Department of Health (IDOH) confirmed a case of measles in a resident of Lake County. The risk to the public is low, but IDOH continues to investigate the case in conjunction with local public health officials. No further information about this case will be released to protect patient privacy. This is the first case in Indiana since 2019.

Arizona

The county public health department of Maricopa says two new cases of measles have been reported following exposure earlier in February 2024. Officials say visitors to five different East Valley locations, including several restaurants, may have been exposed to the virus .

  • Caldwell County BBQ, 18324 E. Nunneley Rd., Gilbert | February 16 from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. | Monitor for symptoms until March 8 [2024].
  • Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream–Queen Creek, 21182 S. Ellsworth Loop Rd., Queen Creek | February 17 from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. | The day before for symptoms until March 9 [2024].

Minnesota

The Minnesota Department of Health confirmed the third case of measles in the state since the start of 2024. The other two cases were reported last week, and all occurred in the Twin Cities Minneapolis-Saint Paul. There have been no cases of measles in Minnesota in 2023 and 22 cases in 2022. Since 2000, there have been 149 cases in Minnesota, primarily due to several spikes in cases.

Michigan

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) confirmed a case of measles in a child in Oakland County associated with international travel. This is the first confirmed case of measles in the state since 2019. MDHHS recommends that unvaccinated people ages 1 and older get the measles vaccine to protect themselves and those around them. MDHHS is working closely with the Oakland County Health Division on this case and, at this time, it is not believed that there have been any other exposures outside of the household, given the when symptoms began.
