Tokyo Metropolitan Government

The Tokyo metropolitan government announced on the 12th that it had confirmed two cases of measles. It is the first time in three years since 2020 that it has been confirmed in Tokyo. Two people boarded the same bullet train, and one traveled on the Tokaido Shinkansen during a period when there was a possibility of infection. A person in charge of the Tokyo metropolitan government set up a temporary consultation desk, saying, “Because it’s airborne, it’s possible to get infected in closed spaces even if you’re not nearby.”

According to the Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Social Welfare and Public Health, the patients, a woman in her 30s and a man in his 40s, took the same Shinkansen train as the male patient in his 30s confirmed in Ibaraki Prefecture on April 23, and developed symptoms on April 3. On the 4th, a man in his 40s took the Tokaido Shinkansen “Kodama 740” car No. 9 departing from JR Mishima Station at 6:54 pm to Shin-Yokohama Station.

The Ibaraki man had a travel history. A metropolitan official said, “Japan is a measles-free country, and infection only occurs when the virus is brought in from overseas. It is thought that there was no infection when there were restrictions on entry due to the coronavirus.”

Vaccination is effective in preventing measles. An unimmunized person becomes infected when they come into contact with an infected person. High fever and rash appear in about 10 days, and 1 in 1,000 people die. The metropolitan government is asking Shinkansen users who have symptoms to contact a medical institution before visiting a doctor. A temporary consultation desk = 03 (5388) 3615 = will open from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm on the 13th and 14th. (Mayuko Watanabe)
