“Measles Outbreak in Syrian Refugee Camp Triggers Health Crisis Response in Lebanon”

Late last week, the Tripoli Municipality and a team from the Epidemiological Surveillance Center at the Ministry of Public Health followed up on the news of the “spread” of measles infection in a Syrian refugee camp. The news was the beginning of the inspection phase regarding the extent of the spread of this infection or not, which prompted the observers of the health department in the municipality and the epidemiological surveillance team to announce a “call” and conduct a comprehensive survey of the camps for the displaced Syrians in Zaytoun Abu Samra in the city of Tripoli.

So far, no conclusive results have been issued regarding the extent of the infection, with the exception of preliminary results that the Ministry of Public Health is waiting to build on. However, this did not prevent the intensification of follow-up meetings in recent times, the last of which was yesterday, mainly aimed at how to work to activate the course of confrontation, especially with regard to returning the immunization program to its normal track.

Developments did not come from outside expectations, according to Dr. Bernard Gerbaka, head of the Vaccination Advisory Committee in Lebanon and a pediatrician, “everything was expected,” following a long and forced break in the vaccination program, which was supposed to be routine. There are not many reasons for the spread of measles infection – if Lebanon enters the stage of spread – as Jerbaqa limits it to two main reasons: the first is the Corona pandemic, which isolated people from everything, and whose first effects were evident in the shortening and even interruption of visits to medical clinics, which led to a decline in vaccination rates among Children, and the second is the financial economic situation that affected people’s ability to complete vaccinations for their children following their prices became exorbitant, while removing them from the subsidy lists. Two reasons are sufficient, according to Gerbaka, for “children to become more susceptible to catching bacterial diseases that are easy to transmit by droplets, skin, like measles, or even intestinal, like cholera.”

Until now, the country has not entered a stage of spread or what might be called a pandemic, and perhaps the best expression of what is happening today is that “what is happening is the harbingers of a pandemic,” says Dr. Randa Hamadeh, head of the Primary Health Care Department at the Ministry of Health, or “out.” break.” It is remarkable that every time the measles rises once more, its movement is in the same areas, which often begin with camps and overcrowded residential gatherings. The sources indicated to Al-Akhbar that, in the recent period, it “started in the densely populated residential communities in Sabra, the North, Arsal, and Akkar….”

There are not many solutions for measles, as “the main thing is to administer the vaccine,” Gerbaka says.
