Between January 19 and March 8, 25 cases of measles were recorded in the Rhône. A “health alert” followed very closely by the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes regional health agency, which considers that this marks the “beginning of a localized epidemic”, according to BFM. “In comparison, no cases had been reported between September 2022 and February 2023,” indicates the agency on its site.
The region has experienced a resurgence of this disease since last September, with more than 100 cases reported, particularly in Ardèche, Haute-Savoie, Drôme and Rhône. This increase is part of a context of progression in France, Europe and the world, the WHO alerted at the end of February.
A “very contagious” disease
According to investigations by the ARS Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, “the original case was each time an unvaccinated person, recently returned from a trip abroad”. She then recalls that “measles is due to a virus which is transmitted by respiratory routes (coughing, sneezing) or by direct contact (hugs, handshakes)” and that it is “very contagious”: in the absence of preventive measures, one patient can contaminate up to twenty people.
The ARS calls on parents to check the vaccination status of children and to be attentive to the slightest suggestive symptoms. If you experience symptoms (high fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, general fatigue and rash with small very red spots), you should consult a doctor quickly.
